Very Needy Today

Ok, one more time--please comment, anyone who reads this, you must have an opinion one way or the other.  I promise not to think you're stalking me even if we don't talk that often (or ever, and I don't even know you) and you comment...which is totally something that I assume people will think about me if I comment on something, because I'm kind of a crazy person, but which is mostly the reason I'm just a lurker on blogs and not, you know, a contributing member and whatnot.

So, baby names.  It's a boy (if you couldn't already tell from the baby shower pictures).  I thought we had decided on a name (and by we, I mean Jason pretty much got to pick, but I have veto power):  Robert Leroy Parker.  Which was fine, I didn't LOVE the name Robert (no offense to any Roberts out there), but I was fine with it, and Jason for some reason inexplicably LOVES the name Leroy.  And it's his Grandpa's middle name.  And he's also using it to honor his awesome Great Uncle Leo, who I, unfortunately, never got to meet, but that's beside the point.  Also, it's the real name of Butch Cassidy, like, the whole thing, "Robert Leroy Parker".

So, in conclusion, I thought we had decided on a name, but really this was actually the second place name because I had previously vetoed Leroy as a first name.  But then on the drive back to LA from the Bay Area, Jason had a nice solid 6 hours to wear me down (what a pushover I am).  So now, he's proposing Leroy Charles Parker, and of course there is justification for this one too:

He is identifiying the caveat that I can just call him Charlie (which I really like and which is the first name of MY really awesome Great Uncle), and since I will call him Charlie and Jason will call him Leroy, he'll just get to pick which name he likes better for his friends, etc. to call him later.  So, why "Leroy Charles" and not "Charles Leroy"?  Well, that is the exact name of his Grandpa, which he thinks is too much, you know, wants to honor him, but not quite with the whole thing.  I don't know, I'm definitely considering this much more than before because I really do like the name Charlie.  Also, as Jason pointed out, when I do use his first name ("Leroy Charles Parker, get in here!") he will know that I seriously mean business and that he had better start wtih the explaining and whatnot, which is kind of true and cute.  Jason really wants to bring this name out of retirement...

So what do YOU think?  Am I crazy?  PLEASE I NEED YOUR HONEST THOUGHTS ON LEROY

  1. It is a lot of name, but if you guys commit to owning it from day 1 I think it could work and you have the charmingly old school angle to work and you can pretty much get away with anything if it's a family name.

But I don't think you'll be successfully able to both call him something different, I think one name will win out.

So, if you're okay with the possibility that everyone will call him Leroy 100% of the time (but with the flip side chance that Charlie will win), then go for it!

  2. But what do you think of the NAME? Could you committ?????

  3. Personally, no, I don't think I could, because I don't love the name. What do you think of Roy or Lee? Because if you like either of those nicknames, I think you could rock it and have Jason on board and then have Leroy be his awesome hidden first name.

But I'm someone who might name her future child Billy Bob because of my husband's urging, so you have to take that with a grain of salt.

  4. Well, yes, but clearly you have an actual good name since that translates to Willam Robert--and everyone loves Will :). I suppose I could get behind Lee or Leo...or take over the world with Charlie!

  5. In a super related note, Ryan did have a super hot/super nice/super athletic roommate named Lee at UCSB at one point, so there's that :-)

  6. I prefer Leroy over Robert (sorry Laura). And why not call him Leo? That is a sexy name! And I think Lee will actually be the default. Just lake, Stace or Dawn or Steph. You know? I'm behind this 100%. Not a fan of Bob.

  7. Also, I would like to assure anyone who's comments are oddly disappering that IT'S NOT ME I SWEAR. Please re-post!

  8. Hi Stacey,

I personally really like the name Leroy. I think it has a little bit of an African-American connotation but I think it also falls into the super-hip-right-now name category like Miles or Oscar. I like that it’s both easy to pronounce and unique. And I think that since “old man names” are having a big comeback it’s not actually that far out there. It does sound a little bit like a mischievous troublemaker to me – but isn’t that a good thing?

However, I am not into one parent calling him one name and the other calling him another. Growing up as someone with “two names” (even though one is a nickname for the other but they still seem very separate – not the same as a nickname that’s the first syllable) I would not recommend it. It’s always been kind of awkward for me and there are still some people who always call me Bridget. I worry that if you and Jason aren’t on the same page about what you call your son it will be hard for other people to know what to call him – they have to basically take a side. As for the kid deciding for himself – I was always encouraged to do that and was a big flip-flopper, which was hard. Plus, if Charlie were to “win out” then he would always have to correct people who call him Leroy, not that that’s the biggest deal in the world but as someone who’s dealt with it I wouldn’t choose to have my child do the same.

    Those are my thoughts!

  9. Argh! Bridie--I have no idea how your comment is GONE...AGAIN, but I did read it :) I think I'm leaning more and more toward allowing Jason his dream name...

  11. I really like Leroy - and Lee or Leo as a nickname! It's different, a little unexpected, but it's still a real name. It's not likely that there will be 5 kids in his class with the same name (ugh, that's the worst). And being your kid, he's going to be super cool and adorable, he'll totally be able to pull off an off-beat name.

  12. I like Leroy, and definitely Leo as a nickname! I agree with the other posts, though, I don't think you'll be able to keep up with you and Jason calling him 2 different things. It will just be difficult. And, when he starts school, they'll want to know what to call him, so you'll have to choose one or the other before he is able to really decide what he likes.
